What is Coutil?

This is a question I often get so I'm going to answer it here "in a nutshell".

Coutil is a fabric that is engineered specifically for corset making. It can be a very fine herringbone weave but it can also be a brocade or a satin. What makes coutil coutil is ...a few things. Coutil has a high thread count, which means it's not inclined to stretch and bones are not likely to work holes through it. Coutil is not bulky, it's very fine and this coupled with it's strength make it the ultimate fabric for corset making and for the foundation of evening wear bodices. It is always made from natural fibers, either 100% cotton or a cotton viscose blend so it breathes and absorbs sweat.

Beautiful brocade coutil means you can make a corset from one layer of fabric and it will be both strong and beautiful. Use a layer of herringbone coutil cut on the crossgrain for the lining and a layer of satin coutil or brocade coutil as the exterior layer and you'll have a corset strong enough for tight-lacing.

Theaters have learned the value of coutil - a well made corset can last for years with a little care when made from coutil. But...not all coutil is created equal and there are companies selling "coutil" at what may seem amazing prices. Be wary of great priced coutil - high thread count means more threads required and more labour to weave so good coutil is costly. Some companies assume that because a fabric has a herringbone weave it is coutil, but that is not the case.

Coutil is not just the perfect fabric for corset making it's also used for period boned bodices, doublet foundations, basques to mount multiple layers of net to for a skirt, bust flatteners; anything that requires strong durable and fine fabric.

Regency Corset - Instructions based on pattern by The Mantua Maker

Regency Corset Pattern 1800-1820

Farthingales now stocks a Regency Corset Pattern and a Regency Corset Kit. The pattern is produced by "The Mantua Maker". Sizes 2 through 24 come in one pattern envelope and fit bust sizes 30inch (76cm) through 53inch (135cm). This pattern and kit is NOT for the novice sewer. To have success with this pattern you should have experience with sewing gussets and with binding right angle edges.
I did not sew this sample up myself as my time is becoming limited. I hired an experienced costume seamstress who has excellent skills and it took her in excess of 15 hours in sewing time by following the instructions. We both believe this time could be shaved down to about 10 hours or less by someone with experience who is using the instructions only as a guide. The pattern pieces fit together beautifully! And we were very happy with the end result however my seamstress found the instructions incomplete, the writer assumes the sewer has basic construction knowledge. We always approach testing a pattern as if we know very little and if this is the case then you will have difficulty. We recommend that you read the instructions over carefully and make notations, there are lots of extra bits of historic information included and the illustrations are quite good. We also suggest that you rely on your own experience and understanding of the fabrics you are using to adapt techniques and not always follow the instructions to the "T". Sizing of this pattern like any other should be checked against your body measurements before the pattern is traced off or cut out. We built a size 14, which is supposed to fit a 41 inch bust, however the finished bust measurement is 29". We do not make any alterations to the patterns we test and we make all patterns in size 14, this pattern tends to fit well in the front but be very narrow in the back which would not be a difficult alteration to make consider the seam placements. A four inch gap between the two centre backs is an acceptable gap for this time period. Illustrations in the instruction sheets suggest the centre backs will meet, this was done to illustrate the lacing technique not to indicate fit. The illustrations also suggest the shoulder straps will fit over the shoulder much like a bra strap would, this would not have been the case. Fashions at the time revealed a great deal of neck and shoulder and the corset is cut to accommodate the fashion. The shoulder straps will splay out over the shoulder crest. Overall we like the finished result but it was a struggle to get there when approaching it from a novice perspective. This corset pattern should be attempted only if you have at least 15 hours or more of sewing time available. Always make a "mock-up" in scrap fabric for any corset you are making for the first time in order to test fit.

Regency Corset 1800-1820

We built the "Riding Corset" version of the Regency Corset

Using 90-1150-01 satin coutil as the shell fabric and #74-1141-01 inside with an interlining of padding #05-T710-S1 to minimize the visibility of bones on the satin. We wanted a more interesting look so we trimmed the corset with black satin, black eyelets and black corset lacing. We followed the instructions for single cord lacing and agree with the designer that this is a very difficult lacing technique and we would likely never use it due to extreme inconvenience. Note the wrinkles happening in front, we used bones only in the in the back and in the two side-front seams. Decorative stitching was often used to help support the front of corsets of this time period, you can add this detail or you may wish to add extra boning. The effect may be less obvious on a human body, foam breasts can only be shifted a limited amount. * notice the width of bare shoulder

As usual we did modify some of the methods of construction.We did not include padding in the gussets. Bust gusset openings were marked with a tracing wheel and stay stitched before cutting. Meaning we stitched along the tracing wheel marks, then we clipped to the corners, folded the seam allowance back along the stitching line and pressed the seam allowances to the inside. Pinned the gussets into place and topstitched close to the pressed edges. It's hard to make this make sense without the pieces in front of you but it's important to be aware to pay close attention to this part. The laced hip gussets also require consideration and patience. Instructions for these are very limited as are the instructions for binding the various corners and angles of which the laced hip gusset is the biggest challenge and requires good hand work skill. Bias binding needs to be 2inches wide.

This is our first pattern by "The Mantua Maker" and we will be testing others in the not too distant future. Patterns are printed on heavy blueprint paper so they are durable. Pieces are well drafted and fit together without difficulty, only concern I had was with the fit but perhaps I should follow my own advice and always measure the pattern first….not after! And as with all Historic patterns - the fit is different from modern day garments. If you are an experienced seamstress you likely do little more than glance through the instructions if even that, you will not have a problem provided you do understand gussets and binding.

Coutil, Lacing Bones & Bra Cups

We've recently received samples from two of our manufacturers; 5 new coutils and new lacing bones. The lacing bones were not quite right another sample is being made. I'll test them when they arrive and post the info here.

The new coutils include two vintage blue/grey ones - one is the same very fine herrringbone we stock in white, beige and black and the other is a matte satin. They match each other so would make an incredible double layer coutil corset - strong and beautiful.

The other three coutils are all brocades; black with deep red roses, black with deep red dots and a very pale lavender rose patterned brocade coutil.

I'm also waiting on "bra cup" samples and hope we'll be able to stock two different shapes in both black and beige but the samples have not yet arrived so time will tell. They could be used for bra making but we'll demonstrate how to cover them on the "tips n tricks" section of our web site.

Using "D" rings on a corset

"Lacing Rings" are "D-rings" that have been mounted on a tab that has a hole in it, the hole is there to allow you to attach the ring to the corset, either by sewing or riveting.

Instead of using grommets or eyelets to lace up a corset you can use "Lacing Rings" or "D-rings" and the best way to attach either lacing rings or d-rings is to use rivets. You could sew them on using a button hole stitch and quilting thread but rivets are more secure.You can also decorate a corset with rivets. It's best to attach rivets with a rivet setting die on a press or twist machine.

For security give serious consideration to using lacing bones with your riveted "lacing rings", the lacing bones mean the rivet will be secured in the steel bones rather than just in the fabric.

The photo shows all the parts without the fabric; white steel lacing bone, rivet base, rivet cap and "lacing ring" or D-ring. All are in an "antique brass" finish.

I'm not using fabric so that you can see exactly what is happening. Imagine the bone is in your finished corset. (See "How to use Lacing Bones", in the Tips and Tricks section if needed) .

Place the rivet base through the lacing bone hole from the wrong side (inside) of the corset.

Place the "Lacing Ring" (D-ring unit) on top. Keep in mind your lacing bone is encased in the corset fabric. As you can see in the photo below, the rivet is fairly long but depending on the bulk of your fabric (especially if you're using heavy upholstery fabric) you may have a problem so always check before you try and set the rivet.

Now add the rivet cap.

Once the rivet cap is placed on top take the unit to the rivet setter. Some people do use a mallet (a metal hammer will crush the rivet cap/head) but the best set is with a rivet setting die on a machine.

Consider switching colours around. Here we show a brass rivet with a black lacing ring.

Binding the Edge of a Corset

The following is an excerpt from the book "The Basics of Corset Building", by Linda Sparks. You can order a copy of this book here through our secure shopping cart.

Bias tape can be any width and it’s a simple strip of fabric that has been cut on the bias of the fabric rather than with or across the grain. Some bias tapes come prefolded but you’ll likely make your own so that it matches your corset fabric. Contrasting bias tape can be an attractive and simple design feature and can be made of any fabric.

Bias tape is commonly used to bind the top and bottom edges of a corset to finish these edges. The important characteristic of bias tape is its ability to stretch and shrink to accommodate both concave and convex curves without puckering or pulling. An ordinary ribbon doesn’t respond the same way and can’t be used to bind the curved edges. A cotton or cotton/viscose petersham ribbon will work but you need to be sure it’s a real petersham ribbon and not polyester. Many terms are misused and you may think you’re buying petersham ribbon and it’s not. The right petersham ribbon won’t have smooth selvedges. The edges will be bumpy. If they’re smooth then there is a woven selvedge to stabilize the ribbon and it won’t stretch and shrink as needed. Bias tape will always work and is the best product for the novice corset maker to use.

Test your choice in ribbon before sewing. It should pin neatly into place without puckering or pulling. The visual effect of your bias binding will change with the width of the bias binding you use and the size of the seam allowance. You’ll get a wider flatter look if you use a wider bias binding. Sew a ½” (13mm) seam allowance and don’t trim it down, and you’ll get a smaller more three-dimensional look if you use narrower binding, or trim the seam allowance down and use the double bias method.

Making Your Own Bias Tape

This is simple if you have the right tools: a two-inch wide see-through ruler and rotary cutter or scissors.

First: Do the Math!

For Single Bias Binding

Bias tape needs to be at least four times the desired finished width of the binding. Add ¼” (6mm) to 3/8” (9mm) total to help with the stretching and easing you may have to accommodate when binding curves.

For Double Bias Binding

Bias tape needs to be at least six times the desired finished width of the binding. Add ¼” (6mm) to 3/8” (9mm) total to help with the stretching and easing you may have to accommodate when binding curves.

Decide on the width of bias tape you want. This depends on your seam allowance at top and bottom, what kind of effect you want, and which method of binding you choose, either single or double. Assuming the seam allowance is ½” (13mm) and you’re using the single bias method, then you’ll need bias tape that is at least 2” (50mm) wide plus 1/4” (6mm) for a total width of 2 ¼” or 56mm.
Spread your fabric out on the table. It should be pressed and wrinkle free. Your see-through ruler should have small squares on it and you can line these squares up with the selvedge so it is running diagonally through the squares.
Use disappearing ink or chalk to draw the lines on both sides of the ruler for the first strip and use one of these lines to line up your ruler for the next strip. Repeat to get the number of strips you require.

Note: You may want to measure the lengths of the top and bottom edges to see what lengths you’ll need. If the lengths are longer than what you can get in one piece of bias tape, then you’ll need to piece the bias tape before sewing it onto your corset.

Cut the bias strips along the lines you have drawn
If you need to piece them together do so by using the angles already found at either end. Don’t cut these angles off as you need to sew the pieces together on the bias to keep the stretch characteristic.

Applying Bias Tape

There are two basic methods of applying bias tape to a garment; single and double binding. Double binding is sometimes known as French binding.

Single Binding

With right sides together and raw edges aligned stitch the bias tape to the edge of the corset, having folded back the end of the tape so that it will be encased within the bias binding when finished. You’re stitching along the seam line.
Flip the bias tape over the seam allowance.
Press the bias tape seam.
Fold the raw edge of the bias tape toward the raw edge of the corset.
Roll the folded bias tape over the seam allowance so that the folded edge is on your stitching line that attached the bias tape to the corset.
Hand stitch the folded edge into place.

Double Binding

Fold the bias tape down the center lengthwise, wrong sides together, raw edges together.
Place the bias tape on the edge of the corset (right sides together) with the raw edges of the bias tape lined up with the raw edge of the corset. Fold back the front and back ends so they will be encased in the bias tape once it’s sewn into place. Stitch the bias tape to the corset along the seam line, stitching through both layers of bias tape and the corset.
Flip the bias tape toward the raw edges and roll it over the edge to the inside of the corset. The folded edge should come to the stitching line you have just sewn.
Hand stitch the folded edge of the bias tape in place.

Both methods have been illustrated using 2” wide bias tape, a common size available for purchase at most retail stores.

Making and Applying Petersham Ribbon

Petersham ribbon can also, be used to bind your corset edges and is even simpler to use than bias tape. Petersham ribbon can be difficult to find and good color matches may be impossible so bias is often a better choice as it can be made out of the same fabric as your ) corset.

If you do choose to use Petersham ribbon the 25mm (1'') wide size is a good choice.

Cut a length of Petersham ribbon the length of the edge you need to bind plus 25mm (1") The 1'' is to allow both ends to be tucked back by 1 13mm (1/2") each.
Press the Petersham ribbon in half length wise.
Fold one end of the ribbon under by 13mm ( 1/2" )
Start pinning the ribbon in place.
When you get to the opposite end fold it under. The ends should line up with the front and back edges of the corset.
Machine stitch the ribbon, with right side of corset up, catching both edges of ribbon on the right side and the wrong side. Be very careful not to hit a bone!
You can hand stitch this if you are unsure about catching the edges of the ribbon on both right and wrong sides.

Lacing tips are sold by the foot and are actually a shrinkable tube.

1/8"diameter before shrinking

Cut a piece of tubing about ¾" long. Using a needle and thread (contrasting thread used for illustration purposes, you'll probably want yours to match!) bind the end of a lace, do not cut the thread! Drop the needle through the piece of tube and tug gently until the cord end is well within the tube. Hold the tube close to a candle flame or hot iron; be careful not to touch either. The tube will begin to shrink and tighten around the cord. Let cool and cut off excess tube. Repeat with opposite end of cord.

Applying Lacing Tape with Bone Casing

To ascertain the length of lacing tape you need, measure the back edge of your corset where the lacing tape will be sewn to. (Note: you may have to remove part of the pattern if it has the grommet section on it) You will need two times this length – one for each center back.
Open the folded edge of the lacing tape and place the lacing tape right side to right side of the corset back with raw edges together.
Stitch, following the fold line. Flip the bone casing into place and keep the raw edges (just sewn) in between the folded edges of the lacing tape.
Top stitch and you are done.
Slide in the bones of your choice 50-8206- series or 50-8308- series both fit. Bind the top and bottom edges as usual.

Make Your Own Garters

How to Make Garters

Making your own garters is simple and means you can design your own garters to!

You don't even need a sewing machine, but we've used one here.

Choose your supplies, you'll need:

elastic (how much depends on how long you want them)
links (these attache the garters to a garment)
garter tabs
slides or buckles to adjust length

I've chosen black elastic, with black links, black garters and silver buckles and I've made mine longer than most people would want.

Link # 02-8629-90
Buckle # 91-8645-20

All you need to make a single garter, just multiply by the number of garters you want…and it’s totally your choice. Some people like just one garter per leg and some like as many as 4. We sell supplies in “half dozen” (6 pieces) so you could have 3 garters per leg.

Cut your elastic into pieces the length desired…maybe 6 inches.

Slide one end through the enclosed hole in the link and stitch it.

Slide the buckle onto the elastic with the “flap” on the “right side” or satin side of the elastic. The elastic should be between the “teeth” and the bar and not through the silver loop.

Next, hook on your garter, or if you’re not using a detachable version slide it on to the elastic.

Now take the end of the elastic (that does not have the link sewn onto it) and thread it through the back of the buckle…through the silver loop.

Sew the cut end of the elastic so that it is permanently attached to the silver loop of the buckle.

Your buckle should look like this:

Adjust the length of the garter to where you think you want it and them close the buckle “flap”.

Your garter is ready to wear. If you need to adjust the length, just open the buckle “flap” and slide the elastic to where you want it then close it.

ALLWAYS remove your garters from the garment before laundering. This is really easy when you use a “link” at the top.

Lace corset

I made the lace corset on a foundation of "flesh" coutil in hope that it might look like just lace on skin when on the body. And it actually does but I'm not happy with the pink lace. The colour just isn't right but it's good to know the idea works. It's a waist cincher corset; pink lace on flesh coutil with beige petersham bindins and pale pinl satin ribbon. The lace was bought locally and everything else came from Farthingales

Blast from the past

I hadn't looked forward to cleaning up my many memory sticks but then I discovered photos of corset we made while in L.A. for various clients....some famous and some on their way to fame.

This was a simple black waist cincher and it worked so well with the white guitar - that I had not known the client had. It was one of those moments "Couldn't have planned it better."

New Corset Copied from a Vintage One

This is one of two corsets I made recently after taking apart a vintage corset I had bought a few years ago and making a pattern from it. It was an awesome exploration process. I used fine herringbone coutil 74-1140-01 which was the exact same pattern as the vintage coutil and made mine a single layer corset just like the vintage one. The original bones were a selection of bailene and spring steel but I used spiral bones for the bailene ones. I included garters as the original had them. I tried to replicate all elements and everything but the lace came from Farthingales Corset Supplies

Ribbon Corset

I've loved this ribbon since I bought it about 8 years ago but had not come up with a project for it until I got thinking about making another ribbon corset. Don't know why I didn't think of it before. The ribbon is 2" wide so it was perfect for this project. I used green ribbon as it seemed to make the floral pattern stand out on the red ribbon. I'll be including instructions on how to make this type of ribbon corset and other types in the next book

Regency Corset decoartive bone casings

The coutil I used for this Regency Corset was a coutil in cream (the cream shade is no longer available but white, black and beige are). I opted to use pale pink thread for the top stitched bone casings and I used a decorative stitch to enhance the casings and make them a design detail. The result was a very pretty corset.

I used the Mantua Makers Regency Corset Pattern for 1800-1820 to make this corset which I made from rose brocade coutil. The cording in the photo was not a detail discussed in the pattern but one that I added. The lacing method used was "spiral lacing".

Soufle, Souffle, Soofull

Remember the fabric we used years ago that could make a costume look like there was just skin. It was called souffle and was a nude colour and very fine. It had minimal stretch but great memory so it could be used on dance and skating costume as it moved with the wearer but retained it's shape. Well I've seen fabrics that look like it but don't have the characteristics it had BUT now I've found a fabric that doesn't look like it but does have the same characgteristics.

JoAnn Zegers is making a corset for her grandaugher Emily to wear on the Corset Fashion Show runway during the Creativ Festival October 22nd.

She's layering fine black embroidered net over silk duopioni that fushia shot with black.

The plan is to pair the corset with black skinny jeans.

Kathi Posliff has started her corset! She stenciled a pattern onto pre-cut waist cincher pieces then stiched along the pattern that she had traced onto the leather and it's under layer of gold silk.

Production for the Corset Fashion Show is well underway! This is just one of many corsets that will be featured and it's not quite finished - it's also not on a proper sized mannequin.

This corset was created by starting with Vogue Patterns dress block/sloper. How I did it will be outlined in my second corset making book which unfortunatly will likely not hit stores until 2013. It's made from deep magenta Chinese brocade and features a hidden busk.

Hoop Connectors

Hoop Connectors are back at Farthingales!

So what the heck is a "hoop connector"? It's a small rust resistant clip that slides onto the end of a lenght of hoop steel, slides through a hoop skirt casing and then slides onto the other end of the length of hoop steel...creating....a hoop!

Makes hoops easy to make, and easy to take apart for compact storage. Great for hoop skirts and Mascots....think the big bellied ones.

Setting Grommets

I've just tried to set a grommet using an eyelet setting tool....the grommet, washer, and dies are now wedged so tightly together they may never come apart. I knew betterm but obviously was not paying attention. Even when you've got instructions...always remember to set grommets with a grommet setter and eyelets with an eyelet setter!

Corset Fashion Show 2011

The 2011 production of the Corset Fashion Show is underway. There are more than 40 people involved this year including professional make-up artists from Shoppers Drug Mart.

No exciting photos to share yet. But I've started the mockup for one of my 3 corset entries. The end result will be a deep magenta satin with butterflies. The mock-up fitting is the end of this week.

I'm also starting a leather corset for the show.

This years corset show will be on Saturday, Octobe 22nd at around 3:00 (time has not yet been confirmed.) It will be held at the Toronto Metro Convention Center during the Creativ Festival.

Grommet/rivet setting machine

The new web site seems to be full functional and relatively glitch free. It's been a long haul and there are still things to tweek. But then...there always will be.

We got several new items on the new site including two machines for setting eyelets(grommet) and rivets! These two machines come with both dies and.... eyelets, washers, rivets and D-rings (lacing rings). If you're spending alot of time and energy setting grommets with a hammer it might be time to consider this investment.

We've also got black metallic busks, diamond busks and antique brass busks!

But perhaps most importantly is all the "How to" information.

Corset Fashion Show

This is the first entry about Farthingales Corset Fashion Show 2011. We've had the first meeting with 28 attendees and 14 contacts - wanting to be involved but unable to make the meeting. So we are off to an amazing start.

Show date is during the Creativ Festival in Toronto, October 21-23, 2011.

Asymetrical corset

Michelle is modeling an a-symetrical corset made from scraps of red and black fabric that were layered. The corset is an over bust on one side only, the right side is an under bust but she's not "exposed" as she's wearing a black bra.

Gina had the perfect poise for this outfit of red waist cincher with glass beading detail that matched the beading on the dress. The outfit was made and designed by Jeff Chief and the stunning hat was made by Thea Crawford. Jeff lives in Saskatchewan and Thea lives on the east coast but that didn't hamper their collaboration.

Wendy's corset is made from black organza ribbons woven to each panel of her corset. Shephens is black pleather with silver button detail and an embroidered celtic knot that was designed by Wendy and machined freehand.

Edwardian Corset w a modern twist

Mary Logan completed this corset just days before the Farthingales Corset Fashion Show. The shape is Edwardian but Mary's creativity was seeking more experssion so she appliqued a complete scene. There's water, rain...created by sequins, a light house, mountains and a tree in the foreground - the branches reaching for the sky and creating a full canopy of leaves of ruched silk over the chest area. The pink and gold shot silk background makes for a beautiful sunset feel.

Embroidered silk corset by Melanie

Melanie is just one of many corset maker/model involved in the Farthingales Corset Fashion Show at the CreativFestival last week.

She embroidered the front panels of this hot, hot pink corset before she cut them. The embroidered images mirror eachother and are beautifully embellished with heat set crystals.

Steel Corset

This welded steel corset was made by Heather Ruthig and modeled by her in Farthingales Corset Fashion Show on October 22nd.

Heather drafted the pattern, cut and welded the steel and added leather detailing. She painted some of the steel with a black laquer and coated the rest with a clear finish.

The corset is lined with suede and the back is two leather panels that get laced just like any other corset.

Corset with Aboriginal Inspired Beading

Jeff Chief of Saskatoon created this corset and dress ensemble that was featured during the recent Corset Fashion Show at the Creativ Festival in Toronto.
The simple black dress has a coutil collar trimmed with glass beads that Jeff attached one by one to create the classic motiff.

The corset is a single layer of coutil that Jeff dyed to deep red. He's added glass beads to severl of the bone casings so that the corset co-ordinates with the dress. The outfit was completed with a stylized top hat made by Thea Crawford from organza that was made into several feathers.

The Corsset Fashion Show at the Creativ Festival took place on Friday. There were over 20 of us prepping in the hotel before - getting hair and make-up done and getting dressed into our first looks.

Who needs alchohol when you get that many women in one hotel room - then we got on the elevator with one poor or ....very lucky man.

The Creativ Festival starts Friday, October 22nd and runs through Sunday the 24th. Linda will be teaching corset making all day tomorrow. Setting up for the show on Thursday and THEN...it's the CORSET FASHION SHOW

The Corset Fashion Show will feature 30 corset in and incredible mix of styles and material. There will also be corsets on display at booth #838 all weekend - the display will change each day. The dress rehearsal was this past Sunday and it went smoothly - no dressing challenges despite so many corsets.

The show will be video taped and posted to Youtube, likely next week.

Black and Red Corset with fairy/butterfly wings

Sharon Gashgarian has been on an incredible journey...of the corset making kind. A sketch for her corset is in one of my earlies blog posts.

Here you can see where Sharon has pinned her many fabrics to a dressform to get a visual for what she plans to build. I work very much the same way and ironcially I chose the same colour pallet for my corset contribution to the Creativ Festivals "Corset Fashion Show".

In this photo the corset has been sewn together and teh wings attached. The corset is not yet finished.

Sharon created the fabric from tiny bits that she sandwiched between two layers of water soluble webbing. This has created a very organic shading and patterning.

The white cages you can see at the hip is a creative version of an historic pannier.

I can't wait to see this corset on the runway.

There will be a videographer and two photographers at the show so I'll be posting pics from the show here on my blog and the video will end up on YouTube

We built the Farthingales web site 10 years ago and it's been rennovated many times since but now it's time to rebuild. The image on the left is one of our corsets during a photo shoot with Photographer Rebekah Boyle while I was in L.A. I've always loved this group of images so it will be the cover page of our new site due to launch in January 2011.

I get asked "What is the difference between a corset and a waist cincher?" A waist cincher is a corset - but it does not cover the chest area. Corsets From Stratford to Toronto

September 23, 2010

The Creativ Festival; one of North America’s largest sewing and crafting events, will be the venue for a very unique fashion show and exhibit: “Corsets – Fabulous Fashion Accessories” in Toronto. The subject matter is unique in it’s self but what makes this show very special is the fact that every one from the corset makers to the models are volunteers and some have never made a corset before! Over 20 people have worked both independently and together to create works of art that happen to be corsets – but not underwear. Most of these people are from the Stratford area but some are from London and Brantford and a few are from outside of Ontario.

Rita Gramsch of the Creativ Festival and Linda Sparks of Farthingales began discussion about this project shortly after last years Festival. By March of 2010 Linda was connecting with people to see if there would be enough interest to develop the corset fashion show idea and remarkably almost everyone who signed on is still with the project. Linda is the owner of Farthingales and Farthingales L.A. both of which focus on corset making supplies and corsets, but she didn’t want to design or build all the corsets. She wanted to see fresh approaches and was willing to coach anyone who needed help, though she’s found little coaching on her part has been needed as people are helping each other out. Linda comments: “It’s been a remarkable experience to see all these corsets come to life. Many of the corset makers are artists in their own rite so they’ve brought skills to the table that I don’t have and they’ve brought fresh perspective as to what a corset can be.” “No one has all the skills that this team of women & men (yes we have two) posses as a group and that’s what will make this show very one of kind. Each member of the group designed the corsets they wanted to make and they talked about their designs with me so I was sure no two projects would be similar and none are. I then advised on construction, if they needed or wanted support or I teamed them up with someone else who had the skills they didn’t.”

The diversity of interpretations of what a corset can be is exceptional because so many people are involved. There will be a fairly classic Victorian corset and petticoat look but you’ll also see corsets that appear to be knit, covered in bobbin lace (the lace is being hand made as this is written), made from hand woven fabric designed specifically piece by piece for the corset, and one will even be made from welded steel by the woman who will model it. “It’s a lot of work to organize a show of this size, we’ll have over 30 corsets on the runway and there are over 20 corset makers but it has hardly seemed like work because everyone is excited about what they’re doing and that excitement is contagious and motivating.” says Linda who is overseeing every aspect of the show. So what does she hope to gain from producing this event? “I hope that people will see corsets in a new light – let go of old perceptions of underwear and sex and see corsets as a fashion accessory and an art form. I also hope it will inspire people to sew, this show just might give young people something to aspire to since we’ll have simple corsets on the runway and incredible corsets out there to.” “I also think we representing the “Canadian Way” as this process has been the “anti-project-runway” approach, no one is competing everyone is offering ideas and construction advice when someone indicates they need help. It’s amazing what can be accomplished with a team approach,”

Side Opening Corset

Karen Merriam isn't just making a corset for the Corset Fashion Show at the Creativ Festival - she's making a whole suit! Jacket, skirt and corset. As a proffesional tailor Karen has lots of sewing experience but it's been awhile since she made a corset. She's used a commercial pattern for her corset but made some major modifications to it. Typically a busk goes down center front and lacing is at center back. Karen as opted to place the lacing as a design element down the left side of her corset and put the busk in the back. It means she'll be able to get into the corset with some assistance but won't have to lace it up as the lacing can be left in - it will need to be loosened to get into and out of it but not unlaced and re-laced.

An asymetrical corset

I'm making a corset for the Corset Fashion Show as well and I wanted to do something different. At first I considered and underbust lace corset with exposed bones - german plastic ones that had been dyed RED! I collected scraps of fabric in in red and black because I wanted a very "organic" look. The more I played with the fabrics the more my vision changed and it has evolved away from a lace corset with red bones - though I may still try that - if I have time. The pattern has morphed from an underbust to a partial over bust corset - or "Asymetrical" corset. Pictured here is just the mock-up. The actual corset is now almost finished, I've used several pieces of the black and red scraps and so that none of the panels are the same, I've made a hidden busk and am now adding beads to add just the faintest bit of glitter here and there. The corset will be paired with a black and red tulle skirt.

To see this corset "in the flesh" come to the Creativ Festival in Toronto. The Corset Fashion Show is on Friday October 22nd, and this corset with several others will be on display all weekend.

Black Beaded Corset

JoAnne Zeegers has opted for a classic elegant look using an 18th Century corset pattern but making it in black silk with stunning black jet beading. The whole front panel is beaded and while Joanne did not do the beading herself working with beaded fabrics provides it's own challenges. This period corset pattern will look nothing like a period costume as the fabrics she's chosen create an elegant and sophisticated look. Joanne has every intention of wearing her corset for a special occaision...her birthday in February - a very special number that is not 29 :-)

Corset Making Tip

There are many ways to make a corset and inumerable types or styles of corsets. A detail that had totally slipped my mind has been incorporated by Joan Scheerer. She stitched her two layers of coutil together - (note: this is vintage coutil) and as you can see in the photo she then heavily machine stitched a section above the one bone casing. This area will be under the arm when the corset is complete. The stitching ads support to the corset under the arm but keeps the bone away from the arm pit. If you're shorter than average in the torso you'll know how uncomfortable it can be to have a bone digging into your underarm! This is a great tip!

Corseted Ladies Suit

A buisness suit with the corset built right in! Jennie Wonnacott designed and is creating this vintage inspired suit for model Terri Dans whose short hair and glasses create an incredible professional look. The suit jacket is boned and features lacing up the back just like a corset, visible bone casings have been included as a design feature and the herring bone weave panels are beautifully cut to meet. The photo is of the mock-up stage "Yes, there will be sleeves."
The skirt is also spectacular with several panels creating a flared hem and some of the panels are bias cut.

This is a great example of what a corset can be when we think outside the box.

Hot Pink Silk and Machine Embroidery Inspires Corset

Hot pink silk duoppioni with machine embroidery in briiliant blue, green, red and white is the starting point for one of Melanie Farrar Jacksons 3 corsets. The little bags hold Swarofski crystals that will be hot fused on once the corset is complete. Melanie has made corsets in the past and is excited about building 3 new ones despite a tight schedule. She's also working on a leather corset - not basic black but white leather with black patent. The variety of corsets being creatied for the Farthingales Corset Fashion Show is amazing! Kathi Posliff isn't just making one corset for the Farthingales Corset Fashion Show at the Creativ Festival; she's making two! And never one to settle for the ordinary Kathi is creating her own fabric for the second one to. What you can see here are the tabs for her blue 18th Century Corset. The stomacher of this corset is stunning and it reminded me of sun setting over the ocean. Even for those who have no interest in corsets will want to see Kathi's corsets as they are "Art".

Corset Fashion Show background details

Sara Brzozowski is the first to finish her corset for the October Corset Fashion Show at the Creativ Festival! She chose to make a waist cincher from black silk satin and an Asian inspired cotton print. To continue the "fan" motif from the side panels into the black silk panels at the front and back she cut fans from her printed fabric. She fused the fabric with "wonder under", made sure the fans she cut followed the pattern, confirmede their placement and fused them into place. She experimented with gold stitcing and opted against idea as the fans stood out so well in contrast to the black.

To see the completed corset and find out if Sara added any further decoration to her corset come to the Creativ Festival in Toronto on October 22nd. Fashion show starts at 1:00 corsets will be on display at the Farthingales booth all weekend....though Sara may be wearing hers!

For those who don't know what a mock-up is - it's a test garment. You cut your pattern out of inexpensive fabric to test the fit and design lines. This photo is of a corset mock-up for Sharon Gashgarian's corset entry for the Corset Fashion Show that will take place in Toronto on October 22, 2010. This mock-up is on a stand but will be fit to the models body, it's made from muslin. The actual corset will have wings and be painted.

The corset fashion show will take place at the Toronto Metro Convention Center on October 22nd 2010 during the Creativ Festival. While Farthingales is producing the show there are about 32 women involved and a couple of men to! Everyone has submitted sketches or descriptions which means everyone who originally signed up is still on board which is pretty incredible for a volunteer project.

Kathi is the first one I've got some photos from; as a fiber artist with no corset building experience she's focusing on the fabric. She's creating two corsets for the corset fashion show. One corset is being featured in A Needle Pulling Thread magazine in a three part series - check out the August Issue for the first installment.

Several fabrics cut into bits and pinned securley between two layers of net.

The second corset Kathi is working on will be built from the same corset pattern - a modern take on an 18th century corset. She's taken several fabrics, cut them into bits and with decorative machine stitching anchorded them between two layers of open net. This one of kind fabric is only being used as a detail; it's being combined with other purchased fabric.

There will be over 30 corsets on the runway during the corset fashion show and many will be on display for the balance of the weekend. So mark you calendar and book a day off work Friday October 22nd this is a show worth seeing.

Farthingales is producing a Corset Fashion Show for the Creativ Festival, October 22nd 2010. Follow the link to find out more about this event and the many aspects of the Creativ Festival - you won't want to miss it.

This is going to be an amazing show with 30+ corsets made by over 20 people. Everyone has designed and created a unique one of kind corset. Over the next few weeks some of these corsets will be posted here on the Farthingales Corset Blog. None of the corsets are finished yet but we'll be posting pictures of the sketches and fabrics that are now in production.

This project is awesome in that it's a team project. The women involved are not competeing but supporting the process - right down to shoe swaping to make the outfits complete! We actually had a "Cinderella" situation....who ever fit the shoe got to wear the corset!

Farthingales L.A. is hosting a two day over-bust corset class at Vogue Fabrics in Evanston, Illinois this coming August!

Two full days it tight to learn all there is about corset making but you will learn alot. Most people don't finish the corset in class but at least they have a pattern that fits them and they know how to complete the corset.

If you really want to know how to fit an over bust corset and put one together this is a good choice. Note: white coutil is used and there is limited to no opportunity to embellish it in class. This is all about learning the processes.

This is a great Canadian needlework magazine that features many project ideas with instructions. The editor has invited us to chronicle some aspects of our pending Corset Fashion Show to be held at the Creativ Festival in Toronto, Friday, October 22.

I've started the article already as the first deadline is in June. I'll be writing about the developement of one corset - from the sketch to the run way. The corset for the article will be an 18th Century style that's being created for contemporary fashion. I believe the artivcle will be in the August edition of "A Needle Pulling Thread".

Farthingales at the Creativ Festival

Farthingales will not only be taking part in the fashion show during the Creativ Festival but there will also be a booth to display the corsets after the fashion show for the balance of the weekend. This festival opens the opportunity for each corset maker to work with other creative women, create her own look and incorporate other needle arts than just machine sewing. The organizer of the Creativ Festival said this project epitomizes what the Creativ Festival is all about.

The Fashion show will take place on Friday October 22nd, time to be announced. Day admission to the Creativ Festival is $15.00 for Adults, $12.00 for Seniors and $4.00 for students/youth. The Farthingale's booth will be located within view of the fashion show -- including our booth displaying the corsets from the fashion show.

We are excited to be showcasing a variety of corsets that will represent different types of corset making!

Creativ Festival

That’s no spelling mistake it truly is “creative” without the “e” and the “Creativ Festival” used to be known as the Creative Sewing Festival. http://www.creativfestival.ca/
This is Farthingales big event…in fact it’s more than just big because this year we’re exhibiting, Linda’s teaching a one day corset making class and she’s producing what will be a fashion show like no other! A corset fashion show, that’s not about lingerie.

So what’s so interesting about this corset fashion show? How do I explain it….perhaps “corset consortium” sums it up. A group of women and a few good men are joining together to create corsets and model them. I presented the idea of a corset fashion show to some people I know and ended up with 24 volunteers. Ages range from teens to…well somewhere above my 49 . We’ve got novice sewers and professional sewers and everything in between and we’ve got mentors for those who want them. We’ve got models and back stage management, make-up artists and photographers, jewelry makers and fabric painter and a whole load of enthusiasm. Many of the models will be modeling corsets they designed and built themselves and we have no doubt you’ll see some garment you love because every one is developing their own idea of what a corset can be and bringing their own art to project. I don’t want to let any secrets out of the bag but some of the ideas have even had me in awe and I’ve seen a lot of different corsets! What I can say is you’ll see bridal, evening, historic, fantasy and some amazing needle work details.

The show will be held on Friday, October 22nd during the Creativ Festival at the Metro Convention Center in Toronto. The fashion show is free with admission to the Creativ Festival and if you can’t get there for the show you can still see some of the corsets on display at our booth #838.

Farthingales at Vogue Fabrics

Vogue Fabrics Store and Farthingales L.A. corset supplies have been together now for 5 months and while the joint venture has seen some challenges it’s been a pretty smooth transition. There have been some complaints about price increases and some about Vogue Fabrics not having all the items that Farthingales L.A. did so it’s likely a good time to explain this.
As most of you in the US are likely aware your economy has not be strong the last 2 years and that’s meant than many people – likely even some of you, have had to cut back buying stuff that you didn’t have to have. Unfortunately that meant corset making supplies as food, rent and gas for the car understandably takes precedence. During that time Farthingales did not raise prices despite our costs increasing – suppliers raised prices, shippers raised prices, our rent went up etc. etc. but we tried to keep our product affordable to keep sales happening. Sales still plummeted so we considered how to keep our presence in the US where our American market can have the best (fastest and most economical) access to our superior products. The answer was; find a distributor. We had tracked our sales very carefully and knew what products sold well and which did not and it made no sense to transfer poor selling product to Vogue Fabrics and simply have it take up space when some of that product sells better from our Canadian location. So, “No”, Vogue Fabrics does not have all the product that Farthingales L.A. had – namely garter supplies. However, by joining Vogue Fabrics our clients now have access to so much more than basic corset making supplies. We also did not move our petersham or corset lacing to Vogue Fabrics as they had a much larger selection than we ever could consider! They have tons of colours and a huge selection of other ribbons, tools and patterns as well as fabrics. You really need to explore Vogue to see what a great joint venture this is – you get a lot more shopping opportunity than Farthingales L.A. could ever offer. But, “Yes” prices have increased. They had to increase to accommodate the cost increases that Farthingales L.A. had seen over a two year period. Vogue Fabrics has not until recently implemented the “bulk pricing” policy that Farthingales L.A. had in place. We agreed that time was needed to see how this project worked before we invested more time to develop the “bulk prices”, only recently have there been inquiries as to better prices for large volume and this issue is now being addressed – some items now have bulk pricing options in place and others are pending. Vogue Fabrics is dedicated to being the best option and make every effort to accommodate customer needs when they are able.

Is our second soonest event and will be a joint effort by Farthingales L.A. and Vogue Fabrics Store in Rosemont, Illinois Friday May 14 through Sunday May 16th at the Donald E Stephens Convention Center. Here at Farthingales we’re preparing for a few events and the one that’s approaching fastest SEWFEST WEST April 30 & May 1st to be held in Kitchener, Ontario at the Bingemans Conference Center.

The power point CD is coming along well though it's up to over 40 slides now as I'm trying to include as much detail as possible and that means lots of pictures. I've completed the section on an easy way to put in a busk and have started teh section on how to measure grommet spacing. I've discovered a site called "Scribd" where I can post the completed and very extensive "how to make a corset" CD when I'm done. Meanwhile I'm taking photos and making drawings to illustrate the steps. The techniques I'm using are very different from what I put in the book "The Basics of Corset Building"

I'm looking forward to January when new corset kits are being developed at Vogue Fabrics near Chicago. Vogue now has all the bits to make corsets - a good selection of bones, busks and grommets but most of all they've still got COUTIL! The kits are not the typical kits found around on a few sites. These are fahsion corsets and fun using fabrics from Vogue. They already have some kits on-line at RyeandGingerKits.com but they're making more so because they're going to AnimeCentral in the spring.

Corset Samples for CD

I've spent the last few days sewing samples for an instructional power point presentation CD that will eventually be included with all Rye and Ginger Corset Kits. I've tried to photograph every step so now I just have to get onto my lap top and start writing. It's going to be more extensive than I thought. It's amazing how much is involved in making a corset when you break it down into steps. I've been making them for so long I almost do it without thinking...note the almost!

I'm also getting ideas for my next corset book that will expand on the previous one "The Basics of Corset Building".

Included in the new CD will be steps for putting in a busk, there's more than one way to do this and I've outlined other methods in the previous book.

Developing the corset kits has been really enjoyable, developing the instructions has been a bit more of a challenge because I was trying to keep the number of printed pages to a minimum. I'm hoping the CD allows me to provide a lot of information without the bulk of all that paper.
